WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 2026

Organized by CMU STeP and TEDxChiangMaiPlay - Play with Purpose



A World Environment Day gathering showed how a table of cards, a carefully facilitated process, and honest conversation can help people move from concern about plastic waste toward a shared understanding of the system - and the actions needed to change it.



On 6 June 2026, as part of Chiang Mai's celebration of World Environment Day, 15 participants gathered at Weave Artisan Society to explore one of the most persistent environmental challenges of our time: plastic pollution.


But this was not a conventional seminar or environmental lecture. Instead, participants sat around tables, examined cards, exchanged perspectives, questioned familiar assumptions, and gradually built a shared picture of the plastic system.


The Plastic Collage workshop formed part of a wider Serious Games gathering focused on how games, participatory tools, and experiential learning can help people engage with complex social and environmental challenges. The gathering brought together Thai and international participants interested in using play, dialogue, and collective learning to generate deeper understanding and inspire action.


The morning began with introductions and conversation about the different ways participants were using games and gamification in education, organizational development, and community engagement. After Rain's lively name-game icebreaker, the group moved into the Plastic Collage process, working in both Thai and English to assemble the story of plastic from production to end of life.

Plastic pollution is often presented as a relatively simple problem: people consume too much, fail to sort their waste, or throw plastic into the environment.


These behaviours are certainly part of the picture, but the Plastic Collage helps reveal a much larger system.


Participants traced the journey of plastic from fossil-fuel extraction and petrochemical production through product design, packaging, consumption, waste collection, sorting, recycling, disposal, and eventual leakage into rivers, soils, oceans, food chains, and human bodies.


What emerged was not only a story about waste. It was a story about how materials, markets, infrastructure, public policy, corporate decisions, and everyday behaviour interact.


Plastic itself is not inherently bad. Its light weight, durability, versatility, and relatively low cost have brought important benefits in medicine, food preservation, transport, construction, technology, and many other areas of modern life.


The problem lies in the system we have built around it: a largely linear system based on increasing production, cheap virgin materials, short-term convenience, single-use products, weak producer responsibility, and limited capacity to recover materials once they become waste.


The result is a system in which plastics provide immediate benefits to producers and consumers, while many of the environmental and social costs are transferred elsewhere - to waste workers, communities, local governments, rivers, oceans, ecosystems, and future generations.

Plastic pollution is not only a waste problem. It is also a design, governance, business accountability, consumption, and ultimately a systems and mindset problem.

WHEN PLAY BECOMES SERIOUS


The term "Serious Games" may sound contradictory. Games are often associated with entertainment, while environmental issues such as plastic pollution are undeniably serious.

Yet well-designed games and facilitated learning experiences can help people understand complexity in ways that conventional presentations often cannot.


Rather than passively receiving information, participants become active investigators. They arrange evidence, discuss relationships, compare interpretations, identify patterns, and construct meaning together.


The Plastic Collage does not begin by telling people what conclusions they should reach. Instead, it provides a structured process through which participants can connect the dots for themselves.


As the cards are placed on the table and the plastic story takes shape, something begins to shift. Participants stop seeing discarded bottles, bags, cups, and packaging as isolated pieces of rubbish.


They begin seeing the systems of production, design, consumption, governance, and waste management that caused those materials to exist and eventually escape into the environment.


This is the deeper value of Serious Games. Play becomes a doorway into serious inquiry. Conversation becomes a form of collective intelligence. A table covered with cards becomes a map of an entire system.

MOVING BEYOND THE RECYCLING STORY


One of the most important discussions during the workshop concerned recycling.


Recycling is necessary and should be strengthened, particularly in places where collection and sorting systems remain incomplete. But it cannot carry the full weight of solving the plastic crisis.


Plastic is not one uniform material. It is a complex family of polymers combined with colours, additives, adhesives, fillers, labels, and multilayer packaging. These features may improve performance, appearance, durability, or convenience, but they can also make products extremely difficult - and sometimes impossible - to recycle.


Contamination, poor separation, material degradation, inadequate infrastructure, unstable markets for recycled materials, and the lower cost of virgin plastic create further obstacles.


This means that recycling is only one intervention within a much larger system. A genuine transition requires reducing unnecessary production and consumption, eliminating problematic products, expanding reuse, improving product design, strengthening producer responsibility, developing effective collection systems, and ensuring that recycled materials can compete economically with virgin plastic.


The question is therefore not simply, "How can we recycle more?" It is also, "Why are we producing so much plastic in the first place, and what would a system designed to prevent waste actually look like?"

FROM UNDERSTANDING THE PROBLEM TO CHANGING THE FLOW


The final part of the workshop invited participants to identify ways of changing the dominant flow of plastic from production and consumption into waste and environmental leakage.


The resulting brainstorm showed clearly that no single organization or group can solve plastic pollution alone. Change requires coordinated action by government, business, civil society, communities, and individuals.


Government: Creating the Conditions for Change


Participants identified the need for stronger and more impartial governance, reduced corruption, effective checks and balances, and clearer accountability for decisions and environmental outcomes.


They also highlighted mandatory reporting, education and training, tax incentives, environmental impact assessment with public participation, and effective systems for monitoring, reporting, and verification.


Extended Producer Responsibility was seen as especially important. Properly designed EPR systems can require producers to take greater responsibility for the products and packaging they place on the market, including their collection, recovery, recycling, and environmental impacts. However, policies alone are not enough. They must be supported by infrastructure, transparent reporting, credible monitoring, enforcement, and incentives that reward better performance.


Business: Taking Responsibility Upstream


For businesses, participants emphasized reducing reliance on virgin materials and taking responsibility for environmental and social impacts across the entire product life cycle.


The group identified the importance of applying a "do no harm" principle, introducing credible third-party reporting, investing in eco-design, and supporting research into regenerative and more sustainable materials and forms of substitution.


Eco-design is particularly important because many waste-management problems are effectively predetermined before a product ever reaches a consumer. Decisions about materials, additives, packaging formats, repairability, durability, and recyclability shape what will happen at the end of a product's life. Responsibility therefore needs to begin upstream, at the point where products and business models are conceived - not only downstream, once the waste has already been created.


Civil Society: Research, Verification and Public Accountability


Participants saw civil society organizations as important contributors to research and development, independent verification, monitoring, education, public awareness, and advocacy.


Civil society can help translate technical information into language that communities can understand, bring public concerns into policy discussions, and hold institutions accountable for their commitments. It can also create spaces for learning and dialogue - like the Plastic Collage itself - where people from different backgrounds can explore the issue without immediately falling into blame, defensiveness, or oversimplified solutions.


Individuals and Households: From Consumer Choice to Social Influence


Participants also recognized the role of individuals in reducing consumption, sorting waste at home, raising awareness, and influencing the behaviour of families, friends, workplaces, and communities.


But the discussion moved beyond the idea that individual consumers alone are responsible for solving plastic pollution. People make choices within systems shaped by prices, product availability, infrastructure, advertising, convenience, and public policy. Individual action becomes much more powerful when supportive systems make sustainable choices practical, affordable, and normal. Influencers, educators, community leaders, and social networks can also help change expectations around convenience, reuse, status, and consumption.

FROM AWARENESS TO COLLECTIVE AGENCY


The Chiang Mai workshop demonstrated that plastic pollution is not caused by one failure and will not be resolved by one solution.


It is simultaneously a production problem, a design problem, a consumption problem, a governance problem, an infrastructure problem, a business accountability problem, and a cultural problem. Addressing it requires intervention at multiple points across the system.


World Environment Day is often associated with awareness-raising, and awareness remains important. But awareness alone does not necessarily lead to change. People may understand that plastic pollution is harmful while still feeling powerless to influence the systems that produce it.


The Plastic Collage aims to help participants move from general awareness toward deeper system understanding and collective agency.


Once people see the system, they begin asking different questions:

• Why is so much plastic being produced?

• Which applications genuinely need plastic, and which are simply convenient?

• What products truly need to be single-use?

• Who benefits from the current system, and who carries its hidden costs?

• How can products and packaging be designed to retain their value?

• Where do governments, businesses, civil society, and citizens each have the greatest power to intervene?


These questions do not produce one simple answer. But they help move the conversation beyond cleaning up the consequences and toward changing the structures that continuously generate the problem.


CARDS, CONVERSATIONS AND COLLECTIVE ACTION


A set of cards cannot solve plastic pollution. Nor can one workshop transform the economic, political, and cultural systems that have made plastics so deeply embedded in modern life.


But cards can start conversations. Conversations can change understanding. Shared understanding can build agency. And collective agency can become the foundation for meaningful action.

That is the quiet power of Serious Games and participatory tools such as the Plastic Collage. They help people slow down, see connections, question assumptions, listen to different perspectives, and recognize their own position within a larger system.


On 6 June in Chiang Mai, the Plastic Collage became more than an environmental education activity. It became a space for people to explore complexity together and imagine how the flow of plastic into the environment might be redirected through better design, stronger governance, responsible business practices, informed communities, and coordinated action.


World Environment Day reminds us that environmental challenges cannot be separated from the systems that create them. Serious Games remind us that confronting those challenges does not always need to begin with another lecture or technical report.

Sometimes, it can begin with a table, a set of cards, an honest conversation, and a group of people willing to rethink the rules of the game.
